The Mont Fleur Scenarios
What will South Africa be like in the Year 2002? This issue of Deeper News presents the Mont Fleur scenarios as they were originally published in South Africa in 1992, with an updated introduction by Adam Kahane that explains and summarizes the original project, its context, and its results. The scenarios themselves, representing the collaboration of 22 prominent South Africans from across the ideological spectrum, are: Ostrich (continuation of apartheid); Lame Duck (weak government leading to slow and indecisive transition); Icarus (rapid introduction of populist economic policies followed by economic crash); and Flight of the Flamingos (sustainable government policies leading to inclusive growth and democracy).
